Breast lift currently ranks among the most sought after plastic surgery procedures in the United States. This procedure is designed for restoring perkier, tighter, and youthful appearing breasts. It is useful in enhancing breast contours as well. Breast lift surgical procedure differs slightly in each case since everyone has a unique anatomy. However, steps involved in the surgery remain unchanged.
Your surgeon will discuss various aspects of the breast lift procedure during the pre-operative consultation. They will also explain the steps in detail to improve your confidence and to help you make a poignant decision.
plastic surgeon Dr. David Kim provides breast lift surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA, and surrounding locations.
Anesthesia Administration
You will be placed under general anesthesia before the procedure begins. Typically, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. However, IV sedation and local anesthesia can also be used in certain cases to keep you asleep during the surgery. A nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist will be present throughout the cosmetic surgery procedure for monitoring your response.
Placing Incision
Once you are asleep under anesthesia, the surgeon will begin creating incisions at pre-determined locations. This will be discussed with you during the pre-operative consultation. The surgeon will try and place the incisions in discreet locations so that subsequent scarring is minimally visible. In case of breast lift procedure, incisions are made in the natural folds of the breasts. This helps in effectively hiding the scars.
Lifting Breast Tissue
The incisions made will be used by the surgeon for excising loose breast skin and reshaping the underlying breast tissue. This will help in creating a tighter breast appearance. The surgeon may reduce the areola size for making them more proportionate to the new look. Nipples and areolas may be moved to a more youthful level in case of breasts that are heavily sagging.
The plastic surgeon will re-drape the skin once the lifting and reshaping of the breast tissue is complete. They may bring some part of the tissue that was above the areolas to a lower portion.
Suturing the Incisions
Absorbable or traditional sutures may be used by the surgeon to close the incisions. Multiple sutures may be required that extends to the deeper breast tissue. This will allow the breasts to retain their new shape and ensure the skin structure remains in place. Traditional sutures are usually removed after 7 to 10 days while absorbable sutures dissolve on their own.
Surgical Bandages and Bra
The surgeon will use bandages for covering the incision sites following the procedure. You will be asked to wear a special compression garment or a surgical bra for a few weeks. This will help in expediting healing and maintaining the shape of your new breasts. The garment will also reduce discomfort and prevent the incisions from opening again.
Drain Tubes Placement
Your surgeon may place drain tubes under the skin for eliminating excess fluid and reducing bruising or swelling. You should make sure to clean and change the tubes as instructed.
